Our History

This band program began nearly 20 years ago when a home school mom of three children, Glenda Jones, a graduate in music studies from Florida State University, had an idea to see a program developed for home schooled students to participate in music as they would in a public or private school setting. From those humble beginnings this award winning band grew to over 60 band members. Many of those students have gone on to pursue careers in Music.

In 2007, we incorporated as the West Florida Home Education Music Association (WFHEMA, Inc.), a non-profit 501c3 dedicated to providing home schoolers with excellent musical instruction and opportunities.

Today, the “Home School Band” as we are most generally known, is comprised of six musical groups

• Beginner Band
• Intermediate Band
• Wind Ensemble (Advanced Students)
• Beginner Strings
• Intermediate Strings
• Chamber Strings (Advanced Students)

Students can choose to participate in more than one group where the rehearsal schedule allows.
